Maximizing Space In A Mini Storage Unit: Mistakes To Avoid

Posted on

When renting out a mini storage unit, space can often be an issue. This may be especially true if you're not familiar with how to properly pack and organize your storage unit in a way that maximizes space. Making the most of your storage unit's square footage does take some time and planning. Along the way, there are some organization mistakes you'll also want to avoid; otherwise, you'll be wasting precious space.

Not Disassembling Furniture

Before you begin loading furniture into your storage unit, consider which furniture items you may be able to partially disassemble as a means of saving space. You might be surprised at just how much of a difference it can make to take the legs off of your dining room table before storing it. Just be sure that you properly label all disassembled parts and their hardware (preferably in a sealed bag) so you can easily put your furniture back together again down the road. Packing in furniture items without first breaking them down as much as possible will waste a lot of space.

Not Making Use of Large Furniture Items

For larger furniture items that you can't disassemble, you should still take the time to ensure that you're making the most of the space available. For example, if you're storing a large dresser, consider placing some small boxes or other items in the drawers of the dresser to save square footage. You can also use hollow spaces in furniture pieces (such as chairs and sofa) to squeeze in a few extra boxes here and there, provided that you're careful enough in your placement of the furniture.

Piling Boxes and Furniture Together

Finally, avoid making the mistake of haphazardly tossing stacks upon stacks of boxes into your storage unit without leaving any accessible pathways or aisles. After all, there's a good chance that you're going to need to access a box or a piece of furniture at some point. The last thing you want when this happens is to end up needing to move dozens of heavy boxes and furniture pieces to get what you need. By leaving an aisle down the center of your storage unit, you'll be in much better shape.

There are lots of space-wasting mistakes you could make when loading up a mini storage unit. By avoiding some of the most common ones, you'll be well on your way to maximizing your storage without depleting your budget.
